Shaker 2018 Press Release

Port Alberni’s Five Acre Shaker is taking place for the second year in a row at McLean Mill Historic Site from Aug. 10-12.

The music festival, now in its fourth year, is offering three days of multi-genre music with bands from all over B.C. and Canada.

Headlining on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 11 p.m. will be the Canadian hip-hop group Swollen Members with Madchild, Prevail and Rob the Viking. The group, hailing from Vancouver, have won four Juno Awards, five Much Music Video Awards and four Western Canada Music Awards.

Other bands will include JP Maurice, seen on CTV’s “The Launch,” WiL, Deep Sea Gypsies, Sam Klassic, Illvis Freshly, Wise Youngblood, Sirreal, My Generation (70’s Woodstock Tribute Band), The Joe Cocker Experience and many more.

This year 30+ bands will perform on two upgrades stages with larger lighting and visual shows. The Shady Acres After-Party will be coming back again! Each night after the main stage closes at 2 a.m., the second stage will just be getting started for all the campers who want to keep the party going. The after party is situated far away from the camp site to allow the rest of the festival goers to get some much needed shut eye. Outside liquids are permitted in the camping area and the after party, but not in the festival wide liquor licensed area. The Shaker is unique as we do not have beer gardens, the Shaker boasts a site wide liquor license, you can stand in front of the stage or you can grab a bite from a food truck while having a cold drink of choice in your hand, or walk down to the second stage. There will be more than 30 food trucks, artisan vendors and merchandise vendors throughout the site. A new wellness area will include a vast array of workshops, vendors, performances and yoga.

Twin City Brewing will be on site serving their custom-crafted Shaker Session Ale as well as their other locally brewed beer.

This year, the Shaker, in conjunction with Social Root Consulting, have committed to three green initiatives to promote an eco-friendly music festival.

The Shaker’s first goal is to not sell or distribute any single-use plastics. Drink pourers will either use biodegradable cups or have reusable bottles for sale or giveaway. Shaker organizers encourage festival goers to bring their own water bottles.

The second goal is to reduce waste by offering three options for trash: compost, recycling and garbage.

Thirdly, the Shaker has a goal to cut down on the amount of vehicle traffic at the site.

“We’re working with the City of Port Alberni and they’ve agreed to extend a bus route out to the Shaker which is going to help in terms of individuals driving there,” said Genevieve Huneault, co-founder of Social Root Consulting. “We’re also going to be pushing alternative transportation.”

Folks are encouraged to take the Shaker shuttle, carpool or bike. A Shaker Shuttle schedule will be released soon on the Five Acre Shaker website.

In addition to the music, plenty of activities are available throughout the weekend including a wide selection of workshops, a bean bag tournament, volleyball, bumper balls, water games, shady acres smoke zone and so much more. Sunday will offer kid-friendly games, contests, performances and acts.

Tickets are $40 for a Friday Pass 19+ only, $50 for a Saturday Pass 19+ only, $40 for an Adult Sunday Pass, $20 for a Teen Sunday Teen Pass (ages 13-18) and free for children 12 and under on Sunday.

Camping passes must be purchased separate from festival tickets online. McLean Mill has newly developed powered RV sites and two new walk-in tent camping areas in a majestic forest paradise. Prices for camping are $50 for general camping- walk-in tenting, $75 for an RV with no hook-ups and $100 for an RV with power hook-ups (no water). Each Camping package comes with one General Weekend Camping Pass. Each additional persons must purchase $50 General Weekend Camping Pass to enter the camping area. There is no grey water/sewer dumping, therefor people must have their own storage tanks and empty off site at approved dumping site. The powered RV sites are just about sold out but we have tons of room for your trailer in our non-hook up sites, generators will be allowed within posted hours. Smoking will only be permitted in marked smoking areas throughout festival site.

The Five Acre Shaker started as a memorial for Zakkaree Coss in 2014 on a private five-acre property and has now grown into a full-scale music festival on 32 acres at McLean Mill Historic Park.
